Hey there, Connectors! Welcome to the weekend!

I learned about something very cool recently that might come in handy, especially if you’re looking for something to watch and don’t really feel like paying for a streaming service. WikiFlix is a hub for movies that are in the public domain in the US (many are available to watch in other countries too). It’s an easy way to access such films that are hosted on Wikimedia Commons, the Internet Archive and YouTube.

There are currently more than 1,000 movies listed, including some from the very early days of cinema like Le Voyage dans la Lune and L'arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat. There are a whole bunch of other classics here too, including Metropolis, It’s a Wonderful Life, Battleship Potemkin, Nosferatu, The Kid and Steamboat Willie.

Works that are first published or released in the US lose their copyright protections after 95 years, so creative works that debuted in the country before 1930 are in the public domain (they’re about to be joined by many more on January 1). Sometimes, errors mean that movies enter the public domain earlier than expected. For instance, a copyright notice mistake meant that Night of the Living Dead entered the public domain as soon as it was released in 1960. His Girl Friday (a fantastic film from 1940) is in the public domain too.

There’s lots of cool stuff in here, including many films that have been on my to-watch list for forever. I’m going to try to dig into some of it in the coming weeks.

Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It’s a fun hangout spot, and you’re more than welcome to join us.

Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I mess something up. I don’t look at Twitter much.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are...

  • 🟨 Yellow group — airline classes (BUSINESS, ECONOMY, FIRST, PREMIUM)

I zipped through today’s game. The yellows were up first — probably helps that I have been thinking about travel plans lately. No trouble at all there.

The blues were next, thanks to CRAFT and TRADE showing me the way. REFERENCE and CITE paved the way for the greens.

That left the purples. I’ll be honest, I’m sleepy, so I didn’t give these a moment’s thought. I’ll happily take them as the leftovers for today.

That perfect game extends my overall streak to 301 wins.

How did you get on today? Here’s my grid for this one:

🟨🟨🟨🟨

🟩🟩🟩🟩

P.S. I wanted to use a Status Quo reference in my hint for yesterday’s ‘70s rock bands group, but that band actually formed in the early ‘60s. No matter, I’m going to offer up their version of John Fogerty’s “Rockin' All Over the World” for you now in any case:

Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love!
