Hey there, Connectors! Welcome to the weekend!
My social circle is neither as expansive nor as intimate as it ought to be, and that’s a problem. However, something happened recently that’s helped a bit with that.
My life would not be what it is right now — as in, I would likely not be living in Canada — if I hadn’t joined an online message board for my favorite band as a teenager. It took me a little while to ease up and start posting, but after I did, the people I met there changed my world.
Eventually, I drifted away from that message board and, in 2020, it was shut down. I am Facebook friends with many of those folks and I follow a bunch of them on Instagram, but I rarely engaged with them (I try to stay off Facebook for the most part anyway).
However, I am part of a Facebook group that a bunch of people from the message board are in. One mentioned a couple of weeks ago that several of them had moved to a Discord server. I joined up and have had a really nice time seeing old usernames and chatting with some folks that were in or around my online life for many years. I’ve met several of them in person too.
I have a long way to go before I have the kinds of social circle and friendships that I want to have in my day-to-day life again (especially offline). But this has been a nice way for me to reconnect with some old pals.
Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It’s a fun hangout spot, and you’re more than welcome to join us.
Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I mess something up. I don’t look at Twitter much.

OUTLINE and THESIS made the yellows clear to me right away, as did NOTIFICATIONS and MESSAGES for the blues. However, I misclicked and included FIGURE instead of PROFILE first. Oops!
FIGURE and GATHER then opened up the greens. I deduced the purple group as soon as those landed on the bottom line, and cracked a little smile at UNboxing. That’s the second game in a row I’ve flown through and win number 587 on the trot.

P.S. I am pretty excited to hear the new Queens of the Stone Age album that’s coming out later this month. I liked, but didn’t love, the first couple of songs they released from it. ”Where The Goth Girls At?” is rad, though. It’s a stompy, trippy track, a bit of a throwback to the Era Vulgaris era from (sigh) two decades ago.
I will offer no comment regarding the song’s title and whether I asked myself the same question many times in my teens.
Or whether I did so many times since then.
Ahem.
