Hey there, Connectors! I hope you’ve had a fantastic weekend so far.

Folks, I am bummed. Babymetal announced a North American tour this week, but there’s no Montreal date. I saw them last year and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. The energy was incredible and it was so outrageously fun.

So I’m sad I won’t be able to see them this time around. Unless, that is, I decide to go to Toronto on a Monday night in September…

Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It’s a fun hangout spot, and you’re more than welcome to join us.

Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I mess something up. I don’t look at Twitter much.

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Sunday, April 5 are coming right up.

What Are Today’s Connections Hints?

Scroll slowly! Just after the hints for each of today’s Connections groups, I’ll reveal what the groups are without immediately telling you which words go into them.

Today’s 16 words are...

  • PIPE

  • PANCAKE

  • PULPIT

  • LIGHT SWITCH

  • SHELL

  • VIOLIN

  • MUSHROOM

  • ORBIT

  • COIN

  • PASTEURIZE

  • NUCLEUS

  • MAGNIFYING GLASS

  • ELECTRON

  • GOOGOL

  • DEERSTALKER

  • THE BIRD

And the level one hints for today’s Connections groups are:

  • 🟨 Yellow group — particle parts

  • 🟩 Green group — this group should have been yellow, because it's elementary (my dear...)

  • 🟦 Blue group — like house, skateboard and pages

  • 🟪 Purple group — all mashed up at the top

One Word For Each Connections Group

Need some extra help?

Be warned: we’re starting to get into spoiler territory.

Let’s take a look at one word for each group.

Today’s Connections word hints are…

  • 🟨 Yellow group — SHELL

  • 🟩 Green group — MAGNIFYING GLASS

  • 🟦 Blue group — THE BIRD

  • 🟪 Purple group — GOOGOL

What Are Today’s Connections Groups?

Today’s Connections groups are...

  • 🟨 Yellow group — atomic structure terms

  • 🟩 Green group — parts of a Sherlock Holmes costume

  • 🟦 Blue group — things to flip

  • 🟪 Purple group — starting with synonyms for "slush"

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are...

  • 🟨 Yellow group — atomic structure terms (ELECTRON, NUCLEUS, ORBIT, SHELL)

  • 🟩 Green group — parts of a Sherlock Holmes costume (DEERSTALKER, MAGNIFYING GLASS, PIPE, VIOLIN)

  • 🟦 Blue group — things to flip (COIN, LIGHT SWITCH, PANCAKE, THE BIRD)

  • 🟪 Purple group — starting with synonyms for "slush" (GOOGOL, MUSHROOM, PASTEURIZE, PULPIT)

I got the greens right away. No problem there. The first part of PASTEURIZE then caught my eye, because the word didn't really line up with anything else. Nor did GOOGOL, so I was able to figure out the purples.

PANCAKE, COIN and THE BIRD (heh) are all things you can flip. So is a LIGHT SWITCH. Blues sorted. This is definitely a yellow group that felt more like a green or blue, though.

As a lifelong player of Mario video games, I was delighted by the red herring of COIN, SHELL, MUSHROOM and PIPE. Fun one to mark my 400th win on my current streak.

How did you get on today? Here's my grid:

That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. I’ll be back over at Forbes for the Monday-Friday editions for the column. And if you haven’t subscribed to Pastimes already, definitely do that! It would be super sweet of you.

P.S. I recently wrote about a video game called Forever Ago, which made me think of the brilliant Bon Iver album, For Emma, Forever Ago. While “The Wolves (Act I and II)” is probably my favorite track from the record, “For Emma” is a much better fit for the laidback vibe I like to cultivate with the Sunday recommendations:

Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love!

On weekdays, you can find this column over at Forbes. Please follow my blog there for more coverage of NYT Connections and other word games, and even some video game news, insights and analysis. It helps me out a lot!

Sharing this column with other people who play Connections would be appreciated too. Also, subscribe to this newsletter if you haven’t already!
