Hey there, Connectors! I hope you’ve had a fantastic weekend so far.

Rather than tell you about something that‘s going on in my life or I’m thinking about/reading/listening to/playing, I’m gonna try something a little different for today’s intro. Let’s call it a challenge.

I’m gonna give you one week to learn more about a topic you’ve been curious about but haven’t taken the time to read up on. Could be anything. Just keep it relatively clean.

Then we’ll meet back here in the comments or on Discord and, if you want, you can tell us what you’ve learned and why you found it interesting in the first place.

This little side quest could very quickly die on its arse. Or it could be fun.

Be fun and try. 🙂

Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It’s a fun hangout spot, and you’re more than welcome to join us.

Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I mess something up. I don’t look at Twitter much.

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Sunday, August 23 are coming right up.

What Are Today’s Connections Hints?

Scroll slowly! Just after the hints for each of today’s Connections groups, I’ll reveal what the groups are without immediately telling you which words go into them.

Today’s 16 words are...

  • ANTIFREEZE

  • VACUUM

  • BAKING SODA

  • VOLCANO

  • VINEGAR

  • POWDER KEG

  • HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

  • VISCHYSSOISE

  • TIME BOMB

And the level one hints for today’s Connections groups are:

  • 🟨 Yellow group — like a party that’s heating up, these could really go off

  • 🟩 Green group — like eyes that are real close together

  • 🟦 Blue group — like a grainy video on the internet (perhaps), biodegradable plastics and industrial glues

  • 🟪 Purple group — they can deal with a spot of bother

One Word For Each Connections Group

Need some extra help?

Be warned: we’re starting to get into spoiler territory.

Let’s take a look at one word for each group.

Today’s Connections word hints are…

  • 🟨 Yellow group — TINDERBOX

  • 🟩 Green group — SKIING

  • 🟦 Blue group — VODKA

  • 🟪 Purple group — VINEGAR

What Are Today’s Connections Groups?

Today’s Connections groups are...

  • 🟨 Yellow group — potentially explosive things

  • 🟩 Green group — double vowels

  • 🟦 Blue group — made with potatoes

  • 🟪 Purple group — household stain removers

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are...

  • 🟨 Yellow group — potentially explosive things (POWDER KEG, TIME BOMB, TINDERBOX, VOLCANO)

  • 🟩 Green group — double vowels (ANTIFREEZE, BAZAAR, SKIING, VACUUM)

  • 🟦 Blue group — made with potatoes (HOME FRIES, POTATO BATTERY, VISCHYSSOISE, VODKA)

  • 🟪 Purple group — household stain removers (BAKING SODA, CLUB SODA, HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, VINEGAR)

I spotted the double-vowel words pretty quickly. VISCHYSSOISE also had double letters, but ANTIFREEZE made more sense to me.

The cleaning products were up next and I was very surprised to see that those were the purples. I had no problems with the yellows. That left the blues, for which I was able to figure out the category. Not a fan of having POTATO BATTERY in a "made with potatoes" group.

Streak = 539

How did you get on this time? Here's my grid:

🟩🟩🟩🟩
🟪🟪🟪🟪
🟨🟨🟨🟨

That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. I’ll be back over at Forbes for the Monday-Friday editions for the column. And if you haven’t subscribed to Pastimes already, definitely do that! It would be super sweet of you.

P.S. I have this song in my head at the minute and I can’t believe I haven’t used it as a recommendation before. “Last Request” was the song that propelled Paolo Nutini to stardom in the UK when he was just 19. It was his debut single, actually. It’s not quite my favorite song on his debut album — that would be “Jenny Don’t Be Hasty.” Still, this is a great tune for a relaxing Sunday:

Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love!

On weekdays, you can find this column over at Forbes. Please follow my blog there for more coverage of NYT Connections and other word games, and even some video game news, insights and analysis. It helps me out a lot!

Sharing this column with other people who play Connections would be appreciated too. Also, subscribe to this newsletter if you haven’t already!
