Hey there, Connectors! I hope you’ve had a fantastic weekend so far.

Here’s something from the “made me smile” files. Before Foo Fighters’ shows at Anfield in Liverpool last week, a choir from a local primary school (which is barely a 10-minute walk from the stadium) went on the stage and sang one of the band’s songs in front of the group.

The kids gave a very, very sweet rendition of “Times Like These.” The way their faces lit up and they got all giddy when Dave Grohl walked up to them absolutely made my day. This sure beats all the times I had to sing hymns in primary school:

Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It’s a fun hangout spot, and you’re more than welcome to join us.

Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I mess something up. I don’t look at Twitter much.

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Sunday, July 5 are coming right up.

One Word For Each Connections Group

Need some extra help?

Be warned: we’re starting to get into spoiler territory.

Let’s take a look at one word for each group.

Today’s Connections word hints are…

  • 🟨 Yellow group — HONEY

  • 🟩 Green group — CHECK

  • 🟦 Blue group — GOLD

  • 🟪 Purple group — WIN

What Are Today’s Connections Groups?

Today’s Connections groups are...

  • 🟨 Yellow group — granola ingredients

  • 🟩 Green group — payment methods

  • 🟦 Blue group — Amex card types

  • 🟪 Purple group — what "W" might stand for

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are...

  • 🟨 Yellow group — granola ingredients (HONEY, NUTS, OATS, SEEDS)

  • 🟩 Green group — payment methods (CARD, CASH, CHECK, WIRE)

  • 🟦 Blue group — Amex card types (CENTURION, GOLD, GREEN, PLATINUM)

  • 🟪 Purple group — what "W" might stand for (TUNGSTEN, WEST, WIN, WITH)

"Wild" popped into my head as soon as I got to OATS, so I tried a group with that, WEST, CARD and HONEY. Nothing doing there.

After looking elsewhere, I got the payment options first (GOLD is also a viable option there!), followed by the credit cards. American Express keeps offering me the option to upgrade from Cobalt to Platinum but I'm not sure I’d benefit from that?

Anyway, the granola ingredients were up next. I should have figured that out since I have granola often, though the one I'm using right now has neither nuts nor seeds. Fun fact: about five years ago, I chipped a tooth on a piece of granola.

WEST, WIN and WITH on the last line were enough for me to figure out the purples even though I don't know shit about the symbols of elements. (George W. Bush and one of the guys who give his initials to the name of A&W, in case you were wondering.)

No perfect game this time, but that's win number 490 on my current streak.

How did you get on this time? Here's my grid:

🟨🟪🟩🟨
🟩🟩🟩🟩
🟨🟨🟨🟨
🟦🟦🟦🟦
🟪🟪🟪🟪

That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. I’ll be back over at Forbes for the Monday-Friday editions for the column. And if you haven’t subscribed to Pastimes already, definitely do that! It would be super sweet of you.

P.S. My well of laid-back song recommendations for Sundays is a little dry at the minute, so if you have any suggestions, please let me know! I was trying to think of one when I saw a Biffy Clyro live set in my YouTube recommendations, so I’m gonna go with an acoustic version of “Many of Horror.” This is just gorgeous:

P.P.S. I totally stole the chords from this song for a half-written tune of my own that maybe I’ll finish someday. It was shaping up quite nicely, I think.

Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love!

On weekdays, you can find this column over at Forbes. Please follow my blog there for more coverage of NYT Connections and other word games, and even some video game news, insights and analysis. It helps me out a lot!

Sharing this column with other people who play Connections would be appreciated too. Also, subscribe to this newsletter if you haven’t already!
