Giphy

Hey there, Connectors! I hope you’ve had a fantastic weekend so far.

The World Cup starts this week. I’m so nervous and excited to see Scotland back at the top table of men’s international football for the first time since I was a young lad. Our first game is this Saturday against Haiti. That won’t be awkward for me at all, given that my partner is of Haitian descent. I will try my very best not to wildly celebrate any goals Scotland score in that game, but I cannot make any promises. My reactions are natural.

After Haiti, we play Morocco and Brazil. There are no easy games in a World Cup, and I’d like to think we’ll have a fighting chance against all three teams. Then again, this is Scotland, and I’m very used to seeing this team collapse in glorious failure. I can only hope and dream that does not happen.

(If these games were taking place in almost any other country, I’d be making every possible effort to attend in person!)

Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It’s a fun hangout spot, and you’re more than welcome to join us.

Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I mess something up. I don’t look at Twitter much.

One Word For Each Connections Group

Need some extra help?

Be warned: we’re starting to get into spoiler territory.

Let’s take a look at one word for each group.

Today’s Connections word hints are…

  • 🟨 Yellow group — SHEER

  • 🟩 Green group — STATE

  • 🟦 Blue group — LEVEL

  • 🟪 Purple group — WAVE

What Are Today’s Connections Groups?

Today’s Connections groups are...

  • 🟨 Yellow group — translucent, as fabric

  • 🟩 Green group — speak

  • 🟦 Blue group — demolish

  • 🟪 Purple group — music genre suffixes

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are...

  • 🟨 Yellow group — translucent, as fabric (GAUZY, GOSSAMER, SHEER, THIN)

  • 🟩 Green group — speak (EXPRESS, STATE, UTTER, VOICE)

  • 🟦 Blue group — demolish (GUT, LEVEL, TOTAL, TRASH)

  • 🟪 Purple group — music genre suffixes (CORE, POP, STEP, WAVE)

The yellows kicked things off for me today thanks to GAUZY, SHEER and THIN. I didn't remember what GOSSAMER was at first, but as soon as I saw those three, they fell into place.

The purples were next, thanks to POP (e.g. punk-pop) and CORE (e.g. hardcore or metalcore). STEP might refer to dubstep and WAVE can reference something like synthwave.

The blues and the greens then wrapped up my 462nd win on the spin.

How did you get on this time? Here's my grid:

🟨🟨🟨🟨

🟩🟩🟩🟩

That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. I’ll be back over at Forbes for the Monday-Friday editions for the column. And if you haven’t subscribed to Pastimes already, definitely do that! It would be super sweet of you.

P.S. I mentioned Scotland in the intro and I was telling my partner about this ballad from a Scottish band recently, so here is “Love Is All Around” by Wet Wet Wet. Marti Pellow is a hell of a singer:

The song is actually a cover. Here’s the original version by The Troggs:

Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love!
