Hey there, Connectors! I hope you’ve had a fantastic weekend so far.

Gang, I messed up. There was an electric guitar I’d had my eye on for quite some time. A Gibson Modern Lite Les Paul in rose gold. Second-hand, but seemingly in very good condition. It was just what I was looking for. I had enough money to aside to pay for it. But I waited, and waited, and waited. For no justifiable reason.

And then this week someone snatched it up. I was bummed! And annoyed with myself.

I’ve always wanted a Gibson Les Paul, and I like the idea of having a lightweight version. There aren’t any available in rose gold on Reverb (a popular reselling site for music gear) right now. There are a couple in a fetching Inverness green, but they’re a bit more expensive than the one I’d wanted. Not the color I wanted either.

Moral of the day: don’t procrastinate. Be nice to yourself. Do the thing.

Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It’s a fun hangout spot, and you’re more than welcome to join us.

Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I mess something up. I don’t look at Twitter much.

One Word For Each Connections Group

Need some extra help?

Be warned: we’re starting to get into spoiler territory.

  • 🟦 Blue group — SILVER

  • 🟪 Purple group — WHISTLEBLEW

What Are Today’s Connections Groups?

Today’s Connections groups are...

  • 🟩 Green group — flop

  • 🟪 Purple group — ending in color homophones

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are...

  • 🟨 Yellow group — tolerate (BEAR, STAND, STOMACH, SWALLOW)

  • 🟩 Green group — flop (BUST, LEMON, MISS, TURKEY)

  • 🟦 Blue group — fictional pirates (HOOK, LUFFY, SILVER, SPARROW)

  • 🟪 Purple group — ending in color homophones (CAMEROON, COCKATIEL, UNREAD, WHISTLEBLEW)

Despite the prospect of having a group of four birds, the yellows slotted together in my chaotic mind very quickly.

I remembered LEMON and TURKEY as being bowling-related words. MISS was an easy partner. And I guess BUST? That got me the greens, even though I was off on the category.

Long John SILVER and Jack SPARROW then opened up the blues for me. Captain James HOOK partnered with those. It was between WHISTLEBLEW and LUFFY for the final group member. The last one seemed more like a name and that worked out for me. I don't really watch anime and One Piece is almost entirely outside my realm of knowledge. The reference there is to Monkey D. LUFFY.

That left the purples. There had to be some wordplay here because WHISTLEBLEW, really??? I just didn't figure out the link. It's a bit more dastardly than a very recent group of purples that contained the names of colors.

For anyone wondering, these are...

  • CAMEROON > maroon

  • COCKATIEL > teal

  • UNREAD > red

  • WHISTLEBLEW > blue

I eked my way through this one for a regular rainbow and a 274th in a row.

How did you get on today? Here's my grid:

That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. I’ll be back over at Forbes for the Monday-Friday editions for the column. And if you haven’t subscribed to Pastimes already, definitely do that! It would be super sweet of you.

P.S. It’s St. Andrews Day aka Scotland’s national day, so I have to bring you a song from the homeland this time around. “Flowers in the Window” by Travis is a lovely song, and one that’s that’s fitting for our laidback Sunday vibe:

Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love!

On weekdays, you can find this column over at Forbes. Please follow my blog there for more coverage of NYT Connections and other word games, and even some video game news, insights and analysis. It helps me out a lot!

Sharing this column with other people who play Connections would be appreciated too. Also, subscribe to this newsletter if you haven’t already!
