Today's NYT 'Connections' Hints And Answers For Saturday, July 5

Hey there, Connectors! Welcome to the weekend!

I’m really trying to keep a consistent cadence with non-Connections entries here, but I feel like I’ve been burning the candle at both ends lately. I’m a little burned out, so it might be a hot minute until the next one. I’m not looking for sympathy, just letting you all know where I’m at.

Thankfully, I have a little time off coming up soon, so hopefully I’ll be feeling refreshed after recentering and spending some time with my nearest and dearest. And don’t worry, I’ll still be bringing you the Connections columns. Writing these, and hanging out in our Discord, are among my favorite things, so you won’t get rid of me that easily 🙂.

In case you’re unfamiliar, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It’s a fun hangout spot, and you’re more than welcome to join us.

Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I mess something up. I don’t look at Twitter much.

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

Today’s Connections answers are...

• 🟨 Yellow group — con game (HUSTLE, RACKET, SCHEME, STING)

• 🟩 Green group — combine, as baking ingredients (BEAT, BLEND, FOLD, STIR)

• 🟦 Blue group — yearn (BURN, ITCH, LONG, PINE)

• 🟪 Purple group — kinds of lists (BUCKET, LAUNDRY, SHORT, TO-DO)

TO-DO was a dead giveaway for a group of "list" words along with BUCKET and LAUNDRY. LONG felt like it could fit (as in a longlist of awards contenders before the shortlist of nominees is confirmed), but nope. I was one away from a group. My dreams of another perfect game were dashed. However, SHORT did work, and that got me the purples. So close!

I avoided the trap of ITCH, BURN and STING (as in nasty things you might feel on your skin) by deducing the yellows.

At that point, the greens became clear. I submitted the blues first. It took a second to realize how BURN might fit here but I remembered a "burning desire" is a thing.

No perfect game this time, but that's my 130th win in a row. A slightly easier game than yesterday's tricky one! Here's my grid for today:

P.S. I saw Babymetal live this week and was absolutely blown away. Genuinely one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. It was so, so much fun. I had a huge grin on my face the entire show. The trio blew the roof off the arena with their energy. The backing band are great too — the drummer is especially fantastic.

This is maybe the most mainstream sounding Babymetal song I know of that isn’t “Ratatata” — I’m still obsessed with that song but I’ve recommended it already (and did, in fact, lose my mind when they played it the other night). They didn’t perform “Da Da Dance” at the show I went to, but I’m bringing it to you all the same:
