I really, really needed to see this video.
The magic of the YouTube algorithm reared its head once again over the weekend when it plopped this 132-second clip into my feed.
It’s from the final stop of DJ and producer Fred again..’s USB002 tour, which ended with a four-night run of shows at Alexandra Palace in London at the tail end of February. Fred had some incredible guests join him during this residency, including of Underworld, Mike Skinner from The Streets, Jamie T and Romy from The xx.
Fred saved the best for last though, as he cooked up a special, one-night-only set with Thomas Bangalter from Daft Punk. This was Bangalter‘s first DJ set in the UK in 18 years and boy, did it seem like it was worth the wait.
The pair delivered mashups of several of their songs but the final track of the night seemed to make every person in that room obscenely happy. The video opens with a voice saying something like “dance to what comes next” a few times. The anticipation and tension on the audience’s faces across the first 17 seconds of the video had me fully invested.
And then, a giant needle drop.
Bangalter stated playing Daft Punk’s “One More Time.” It is, hands down, one of the greatest songs of all time. Everyone in that room had probably heard it a million times. But that man hitting the play button on that song for 10,000 people was a special moment. The crowd absolutely erupted. If you could distill that energy into a bottle and took the tiniest of sips,, you’d feel like you could take on the world.
The audience screamed the lyrics, even though Fred and Bangalter cut most of them out. The crowd obviously knew every word anyway. Every person there looked like they were having the time of their lives:
In the last few seconds of the clip, it became apparent that this is actually a mashup. Bangalter and Fred folded in vocals from the Marvin Gaye version of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” — which is also among the greatest songs to ever exist.
I adore good mashups. I have a bunch of them that I’ve been meaning to recommend in the Connections column for ages. This is another one (albeit a version made by someone else) for my playlist:
I’ll be honest, I haven’t been in a great headspace for a while. Everything that’s going on in the world right now isn’t exactly helping. I’m pushing through, buoyed by unwavering optimism, a “don’t let the bastards grind you down” mindset and the belief that everything will be all right in the end.
But man, did I need this blast of unfettered happiness. Thousands of people experiencing pure bliss together. Coming together as one to enjoy an all-timer moment. It was another potent and much-needed reminder to me that not all is wrong with the world.
